ca. 1800, 101 x 50 cm, South Sweden, Skane, Torna or Bara District

The face of a carriage cushion embroidered in cross stitch (twizt and korsstygn) in wool yarn on a linen foundation. The ground colour is a very dark blue verging on black. Three large convoluted knots are aligned on the central axis. Four large red crosses with pointed ends are offset against them at the sides. A rare and fascinating work of Swedish folk art.

Condition

Sewn onto dark brown fabric and stretched over a wooden frame. Obvious signs of age and wear in the dark brown field.
