Cameroon Grassfields Copper-Covered Elephant Mask

Description

Africa, Cameroon, Grassfields region, probably Bali peoples, mid-to-late 20th century. Large elephant mask carved in wood and sheathed in thin copper panels secured with copper pins, with incised and repouss? geometric decoration. The mask features an elongated trunk, curved tusk-like forms, broad ears, and a woven natural-fiber collar at the neck.

Size 52 1/4" L, Weight 16.9 lb.

Ex-Tennessee Collection. Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally.

Condition

Wear consistent with age and use, including oxidation and patina to the copper, scattered dents, abrasions, age cracks, minor lifting/separation to metal panels, and wear/losses to the fiber collar. Stable overall.
