Lega Bwami Society Mask

Description

Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lega people, Bwami Society, 20th century. Carved wood mask of oval form, with a pale kaolin-covered surface, narrow slit eyes, a long raised triangular nose, and a deeply arched mouth retaining red pigment. The cheeks are incised with linear scarification-like motifs, and the sides are pierced for attachment.

Length 14 in. Width 9 in.

Condition

Surface wear, pigment losses, age cracks, small chips, and losses to the edge, including a larger loss visible to one side. Old adhesive label to the reverse.
