Important Early Map "L'Amerique" by Bertius
1624, CARTE DE L'AMERIQUE CORRIGEE, ET AUGMENTEE, DESSUS TOUTES LES AULTRES CY DEUANT FAICTES, by Petrus Bertius, Choice Very Fine.
15" x 19.5" engraved map with wide margins. Handcolored in outline, framed under glass to 19.25" x 24.5". Fabulous early 17th century map of North and South America, with insert rectangular maps of Antarctica and the Arctic Circle--which includes portions of Greenland and Iceland, and elaborately detailed graphics of two-masted ships, a whale and a sea serpent, land features, along with several small images of natives, one showing a burning person. Beautiful cartouche, highlighted with red, green, and yellow handcoloring. This incredible map has the names of rivers, ports, major regions and early colonies--just a few years after the Pilgrims landed at Jamestown, Virginia! Nice, evenly toned light brown, with warm colorations and crisp, detailed illustrations.
