This theory was accepted until 1676 when a scholar pointed out that roc crystal often occurs in the tropics. Rock crystal is natural crystalline quartz which is usually colorless and transparent. Carved rock crystal was highly prized during the renaissance period. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was used for cameos, seals and high end cane handles and was also polished or faceted for jewelry.
