HOFMANN AUGUST WILHELM VON: (1818-1892) German Chemist. First Director of the Royal College of Chemistry in London. His name is associated with multiple discoveries and processes, including the Hofmann voltameter. D.S., `A.W. Hofmann´, one page, 11 x 17 folio, London, 18th March 1865, on a Royal School of Mines printed title, to E.L. Mackmurdo. The attractive partially printed document, bearing at the heading a large printed coat of arms, being a certificate given by the Committee of Council on Education of the Royal School of Mines to E.L. Mackmurdo, having passed an examination with the highest degree of satisfaction. Signed by Hofmann in bold black ink at the base of the document. Folded. With two extremely small stains not affecting the text or signature. VG £100-120
