"History of my Life", by Giacomo Casanova, Chevalier de Seingalt, Volumes 1 and 2 bound together. First Translated into English in Accordance with the Original French Manuscript by Willard R. Trask, with an Introduction by the Translator, published by Helen and Kurt Wolf in cooperation with Harcourt & Brace, New York, 1966. "First Edition" is stated on the copyright page.

"In 1960, literary journals the world over acclaimed a major event in the realm of letters: for the first time, the complete original text of the Memoirs of Casanova was released for publication by the German publishing firm of Brockhaus, which had owned the manuscript since 1820. At long last, Casanova could be read exactly as he had written..."

"...All earlier editions of this unrivaled picture of the 18th century were based on a text that had been truncated, bowdlerized or, even worse, embellished. Time and again, Casanova's direct, vivid, even racy style had been changed into cloying, conventional terms of gallantry, his political and religious views perverted.

The English translation of the original French text- for Casanova the Venetian wrote his Memoirs in French- has been entrusted to Willard Trask, a translator whose scholarly and linguistic proficiency admirably equips him for this task. Copious notes elucidate the social, biographical, and geographical background. The original 12 volumes will be published in 6 double volumes, of which this is the first." (actually only 3 double volumes of this expensive hard cover edition were issued: 1967-3&4; 1968-5&6)."

Giacomo Girolamo Casanova [also: Chevalier or Jacques Casanova de Seingalt] Girolamo Casanova de Seingalt (April 2, 1725 - June 4, 1798) was an Italian adventurer and author from the Republic of Venice. His autobiography, Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life), is regarded as one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th century.
