Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine cast-bronze leg for a smaller piece of furniture like a stool or small cauldron. The leg has a curved body with a vertical arm presenting the stylized head of a griffin with a petaled waist and a pair of petite wings projecting upward along the verso. The characteristically avian head presents with a large beak, a pair of almond-shaped eyes beneath furrowed brows, and perky ears. A nicely-preserved example enveloped in dark-brown patina. Size: 0.9" W x 4.7" H (2.3 cm x 11.9 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Topmost arm reattached to body with small chips along break lines. Slight bending to overall form, with light softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and great brown patina throughout.
