Description
Cyrus W. Field ALS on Pensions for Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and Mrs. James Garfield

Autograph Letter Signed by Cyrus West Field, as “Cyrus W. Field”, New York, December 10, 1881, 1 p., 4.875” x 7.5”. Stenography on verso in unknown hand. Mailing folds, minor chip at top right corner, else Fine condition.
Field writes to J. Stanley Brown, Esq. in Washington: “Many thanks for your letter of the 3rd instant. I hope Congress will do its plain duty in the matter of the pension to Mrs. Garfield + the increase of Mrs. Lincoln’s pension. Will you be so good as to consult Mr. Dawes as to the best course to adopt + advise me …”
Cyrus West Field (1819-1892) was an American businessman and financier who, along with other entrepreneurs, created the Atlantic Telegraph Company and laid the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean in 1858.

Joseph Stanley Brown (1858-1941) served as private secretary to the twentieth President of the United States, James A. Garfield. Brown would completely devote himself to Garfield during the brief presidency. He married President Garfield's daughter Mary "Mollie" Garfield in 1888.
