Description
(1810-1897) Confederate brigadier general who led a corps at Shiloh, later serving under Braxton Bragg, Earl van Dorn, and Joseph E. Johnston. Fine association A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Grenada, MS, June 23, [1862], a draft of a telegram to Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn, then at Vicksburg, sending his regrets that he cannot send a battery of artillery to Van Dorn’s command, as they are needed where they are, and asking ‘Can you do without them?’. He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig. General’. Shows a vertical fold, with slight foxing at the left edge, otherwise in fine condition overall.
