Description
(1828-1879) Union brigadier general at Fort Sumter at the start of the war, he killed Major General William Nelson over a perceived slight, was acquitted, and later fought at Atlanta and in the Carolinas. War-date A.E.S. penned on the verso of an A.L.S. of E. Bradley to Davis, Rienzi, MS, July 7, 1862, complaining of empty commissary stores due to the late arrival of and inability to unload a train delayed by ‘…a force of 30,000 rebels within 4 miles of this place…’. Davis angrily responds, in part: ‘…The enclosed will show the General of the state of affairs there – my troops will be out of supplies tomorrow afternoon – please inform me where I am able to get them…’. Inlaid at top and bottom margins, very good.
