Description
This exceptional spontoon-style pipe tomahawk is a classic representation of fur trade era craftsmanship, likely dating to the 19th century. The hand-forged iron head features a distinctive diamond-section blade with traditional basal curls, transitions into a faceted eye, and is topped with a turned, acorn-shaped pipe bowl. The wooden haft, decorated with decorative brass studs near the head, serves as both the handle and the smoking stem, showing a clear bore through the eye and mouthpiece. Based on the style and construction, this piece likely originates from the Great Lakes or Plains region, though no specific maker's mark is visible. Regarding condition, the head is slightly loose on the shaft due to natural wood shrinkage, and the iron shows a dark, aged patina with light surface oxidation. The wooden haft exhibits honest field wear and a rich, dark finish with no structural fractures visible. H 10.25", W 21.5", D 1.5". Please see photos for condition.
