Lovely and rare map by Samuel Augustus Mitchel Jr. from the first printing of his first atlas, published for just a couple of months in early 1860 before the maps were revised slightly for the second printing after March of that year, making these first state maps extremely rare. Plate numbers in the first state maps were contained within the map frame. In the second issue maps, plate numbers were moved outside the frame to become page numbers. These first state maps also feature deep coloring and much finer printing on the decorative borders. They are much richer in appearance than later printings of the same map. The map engraving is basically three maps in one, showing the whole of California, The San Francisco Bay and Vicinity, and a Map of the Settlements in the Great Salt Lake Country, Utah. Mitchell maps are rich in detail and attractive to the eye. This is a first edition of the California map, which starts in southern Oregon and ends in ‘Lower California’. No railroads were built at this time, but a Wagon Road to Gt. Salt Lake is named and dotted lines show the routes upon which trains would eventually run. Counties are vividly hand colored. Most settlement is along the central coast and inland from San Francisco (entire southeastern portion of the state is occupied by just four large counties).
