.50 caliber. 22.25" barrel. SN: 13268. Blued barrel, color casehardened receiver, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock with patchbox. Single shot percussion tilting barrel breechloading carbine with leaf rear sight, dovetailed pinched blade front sight and a saddle bar and ring opposite the lock. Lock marked in two lines at the tail GALLAGER'S PATENT/JULY 17TH, 1860 and in three lines MANUFACT'D BY/RICHARDSON & OVERMAN/PHILADA over the serial number. No cartouches are present in the wood. A spare percussion cone is present in the patchbox. Nearly 18,000 Gallager Carbines were produced during the American Civil War, many seeing US military service, with volunteer cavalry regiments that included the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 6th Ohio and the 13th Tennessee. The closest serial number to this gun in the Springfield Research Service serial number books is #13088 which was issued to Company A of the 4th TN Mounted Infantry. {ANTIQUE}

Condition
Good. Bore partly bright with scattered oxidation, substantial dirt and debris near the muzzle and good rifling. Barrel with some traces of the thinning blue remaining, showing freckled oxidation, discoloration and some surface roughness along its length. Receiver with some dull traces of case hardening mixed with a moderately oxidized plum brown patina. Markings remain mostly clear in metal, none in wood. Mechanically functional action. Wood good with moderate wear, lightly sanded and showing scattered bumps, dings and mars.
