Cosmopolitan Carbine
American Civil War
.52 caliber. 18" octagon to round barrel. SN: 981. Blued and color casehardened finish, iron furniture, walnut butt stock without forend. Single shot percussion tilting block breechloading carbine with long range ladder rear sight, fixed front sight, saddle bar and ring, large serpentine loop operating lever and rounded hammer. Lock with Cosmopolitan Arms company markings and 1859 date, frame with UNION RIFLE marking. Matching serial numbers under frame and barrel. No visible cartouches. These rare contract carbines were the predecessors to the more commonly encountered Gwyn & Campbell carbines. 1,140 of these Cosmopolitan Carbine were acquired by the state of Illinois. {ANTIQUE}

Condition

Good. Good bore is moderately oxidized with scattered pitting and decent rifling. Metal moderately oxidized with some thinning traces of blue. Markings clear and legible on lock, weaker on frame. Mechanically functional action. Wood lightly sanded with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
