(1920 - 1943) Luftwaffe Hauptmann and fighter ace credited with 173 victories, participated in the Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa, awarded the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves. Schmidt is thought to have been mistakenly shot down by Hungarian fighters on Sept. 4, 1943. Very rare A.L.S. ‘Schmidt’ signed twice, once at top left of first page and again at conclusion on verso, 2pp. legal folio, ‘Im Felde’, June 13, 1942. His ‘Lebenslauf’ (‘Life History’), not translated but worthy of doing so! File holes at left, else very good.
