(1831-1869) Union brigadier general and Grant's staff officer and principal advisor, he rose through the ranks with Grant and eventually became his Secretary of War. War-date signed endorsement on a partly-printed document, 1p. oblong 4to., Corinth, MS, Sep. 30, 1862, a discharge certificate for a Pvt. David Dysinger of the 81st Ohio Infantry, ‘by reason of Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability’. Rawlins signs his printed endorsement on the verso ‘Jno Rawlins’ as Grant’s assistant adjutant general. Shows folds, toning and minor soiling throughout, with small chips to the edges, otherwise in very good condition overall. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Rawlins, with his facsimile signature below his portrait.
