
Description
(1829-1864) Confederate major general who led Jackson's devastating surprise attack at Chancellorsville, fought under Ewell at Gettysburg and was killed at Third Winchester. Rare war-date partly-printed D.S., ‘R E Rodes’ 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p., May 13, 1861], a ‘Requisition for Ordnance and Ordnance Stores’ for Rodes’ 5th Regiment Alabama Volunteers, including infantry accouterments, cartridge boxes, belts, belt plates, and ‘40 Smooth Bored muskets 1842’. Rodes signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion, adding his contemporary rank ‘Capt Codg’. Another hand adds a receipt notation on the verso ‘Capt Rhodes [sic] Warrior Guards May 13th 1861 Ordnance Stores’. Shows a horizontal fold at center, slightly toned at the edges, otherwise in fine condition overall.
