(1836 – 1886) Confederate brigadier general who served in most of the leading battles of the Army of Northern Virginia and led a brigade of infantry in the Shenandoah Valley in the last years of the war. During the war, he was wounded three times, captured by the Union while on a reconnaissance mission, and had his arm amputated. Rare war-date partly-printed D.S. three times ‘R.D. Lilley’, 1p. 4to. on rough brown ‘hardship’ paper, ‘Camp Near Fredericksburg’, Jan. 23, 1863, certifying that a private of Lilley’s Company D, 25th regiment Virginia Volunteers, who has died at his home, is still entitled to back pay. Lilley executes his name twice in the body of the document, and signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his contemporary rank ‘Capt.’ Shows original mailing folds, with a small hole at upper center not affecting any text, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
