Description
(1821 - 1873) Union brigadier general engaged at most of the major battles in the East, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg Baxter's surprise attack killed, wounded and captured 758 of 1300 men in Confederate Iverson's brigade and eliminated it as an effective fighting force in under ten minutes. Running low on ammunition, Baxter's men withdrew to the north end of Cemetery Ridge, having lost all of the officers on Baxter's staff and close to half the brigade in defense of the I Corps right flank. Rare A.E.S. on an oblong 4to. sheet originally tabbed to a soldier’s application for discharge (now missing), [n.p.], June 5, 1865. He writes ‘Approved’ and signs ‘H. Baxter’ boldly in black ink, with another hand adding his rank and other information. The sheet also bears two other officers’ signed endorsements, with adhesive residue on the right edge where the aforementioned discharge application was removed, and with some soiling and original mailing folds, otherwise in very good condition.
