Description
(1823 - 1910) Confederate major general, served in J.E.B. Stuart's brigade during the Peninsular Campaign, seeing action at the Battle of Williamsburg; the Battle of Seven Pines; as well as Stuart's circumnavigation of the Union army while it stood on the doorsteps of Richmond. War-date manuscript D.S. signed twice ‘Will T. Martin’, 1p. 4to., Courtland, AL, Oct. 21, 1863, a receipt for the purchase of feed for the horses of Martin’s command, with his certification below. He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his contemporary rank ‘Brig Genl Comdg Div’. On the verso, an assistant adjutant general forwards the order back to Martin, with the endorsement stating that other such requisitions were paid at a higher rate, and requesting that Martin make up the difference. Martin adds his A.E.S. below, dated April 12, 1864, forwarding a corrected account. He again signs in black ink, adding his final rank ‘Maj Gen’, to which he had been promoted the previous month. The first signature on the recto is very faint, while the second is stronger, and the document shows folds overall, with ragged edges and an ink stain to the left edge away from any text, otherwise in very good overall condition.
