
Description
(1820 - 1885) Union brigadier general, fought at Shiloh and subsequently commanded a brigade in the Army of the Cumberland at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky that autumn. His personal bravery at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 received the commendation of XXI Corps commander Thomas L. Crittenden. War-period signed endorsement on a 4 x 5.75 in. sheet tabbed to the top left of a partly-printed document, 1p. oblong folio, [n.p.], April 13, 1864, a pay account for a 2nd Lt. Henry H. Townsend of the 9th Kentucky Volunteers, with a note that Beatty has ordered Townsend to proceed to Louisville. Beatty’s appended endorsement states that Townsend was mustered into service as one of Beatty’s aides in February, 1864. He signs ‘Saml Beatty’ at the conclusion in black ink. Shows folds, with splits thereto repaired on the verso with cello tape, and with a 0.75 in. split affecting both sheets, as well as a later pencil notation to the endorsement,otherwise in very good condition overall.
