(1818-1867) Confederate brigadier general who later served as Secretary of War, holding the position only eight months due to his many disputes with President Jefferson Davis. Grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Partly-printed war-date D.S. ‘Geo W Randolph’ as Secretary of War, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Nov. 13, 1862, on Confederate States of America War Department letterhead, an appointment for an Edward Joy as lieutenant colonel of artillery under Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton. Randolph signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with additional light folds overall and faint toning to the edges, otherwise very good to fine.
