Description
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Good content T.L.S. with four holograph corrections, 1p. 8vo., Oyster Bay, June 7, 1916 to Robert Grimshaw of the National Security League which advocated for volunteers joining the Army. Roosevelt writes, in part: '...Of course, it's capital to think of having a battalion such as you describe! But I am not able to advise about raising it...' Heavy folds with a pinhole at one fold junction else very good. In March 1917, Congress gave Roosevelt the authority to raise a maximum of four divisions similar to the Rough Riders. However, President Wilson chose not to send Roosevelt and his volunteers to France, but instead an American Expeditionary Force under General John J. Pershing. Roosevelt never forgave Wilson, and published The Foes of Our Own Household, an indictment of the sitting president. Roosevelt's youngest son, Quentin, was killed when shot down behind German lines on July 14, 1918, aged 20. Roosevelt never recovered from his loss.
