Description
(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the 'New Deal' programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. Great content T.L.S. as Governor of New York on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Albany, Apr. 15, 1929 to publisher Roger Scaife at Houghton Mifflin. In part: '...I find this business of being Governor entails the presentation of additional tomes, of which I am the proud author...Will you have sent to me ten copies of 'WHITHER BOUND' and ten copies of 'THE HAPPY WARRIOR'? By the way, how did the sale of latter materialize? I have not had any report. [Scaife notes that 1,990 copies had been sold]. I am off on Thursday for a few weeks at Warm Springs...' Near fine. 'Whither Bound?' is the first published book by Roosevelt, based on a 1926 speech he gave at Milton Academy, and it explores the future direction of the nation, particularly in the context of the post-World War I era and the challenges facing America. Published in 1926, it was a limited-run book. 'The Happy Warrior: Alfred E. Smith' was written in support of Smith's presidential run in 1928, only four years before Roosevelt would win his very own nomination for president.
