This finely woven sumakh bag face by the Moghan Shahsavan used to be part of a khorjin. It shows one of the tribe’s archetypal designs, the so-called "turtle" gul which probably symbolises cosmological beliefs. A bag face of this kind was illustrated as early as 1969 on the cover of the influential flatweave exhibition catalogue, "From the Bosporus to Samarkand". A comparison of bags of this type reveals only minor differences: their composition, ornamentation and palette were so fixed by tribal tradition as to be virtually unalterable.
