18th / 19th century, 270 x 137 cm, South East Caucasus

A particularly rare Caucasian rug, probably a precursor of the Lenkoran group. A very similar example was published in the 1999 book, "Orient Stars" (Kirchheim Collection I). Composed of four large units repeated along the central axis in two colour variations, the composition with pairs of powerful sickle leaves along the sides appears to be influenced by Caucasian silk embroideries.

Condition

Cut sides, the outer border is missing. Replaced selvedges. Both ends reduced. Left corners restored. A repaired area in the middle on the left. A larger repair in the lower finish on the left.
