Gerald R. Ford (1913–2006) was the 38th President of the United States, serving from 1974 to 1977 following the resignation of Richard Nixon. Previously serving as House Minority Leader and Vice President, Ford remains the only person to have served as both Vice President and President without being elected to either office. His presidency was marked by efforts to restore public confidence following the Watergate scandal, the conclusion of American involvement in the Vietnam War, and the celebration of the nation's Bicentennial. Ford controversially granted Nixon a presidential pardon in September 1974 and was narrowly defeated by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election.
