Details:
Helen Hunt Jackson autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated May 21, no year, from The Berkeley, New York City. Addressed to Miss Booth, the letter concerns the possible publication of an article Jackson had written about the new India Museum in London. Signed "Helen Jackson" at the conclusion.
Jackson writes, in part: "Is this article on the new India Museum in London in your 'line'? If so, and you like it, I think the illustrating will come in admirably with it."
She further explains that the illustrations could be obtained from a catalogue and asks that the manuscript be returned if the article is not suitable for publication.
An interesting piece of literary correspondence documenting Jackson's efforts to place her writing with a periodical editor.
Accompanied by a vintage newspaper clipping depicting Jackson's grave on Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, with a caption describing the tradition of visitors adding stones to the memorial.
The letter measures approximately 5.5 x 7.75 inches. Fine condition with light age toning and original folds. The second integral leaf has been professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet.
Helen Hunt Jackson (1830–1885) was an American poet, novelist, and journalist who became one of the most prominent advocates for Native American rights during the 19th century. Deeply troubled by the treatment of Indigenous peoples by the United States government, she published A Century of Dishonor (1881), a landmark examination of broken treaties and federal injustices. Her best-known novel, Ramona (1884), used fiction to draw public attention to the mistreatment of Native Americans in Southern California. Originally recognized for her poetry and travel writing, Jackson became an influential voice for social reform and remains an important figure in American literature and Native American history.
