Joaquin Miller (1837–1913), born Cincinnatus Heine Miller, was an American poet, author, and colorful literary personality known as the "Poet of the Sierras." Closely associated with the American West, he drew inspiration from his experiences in Oregon, California, and the frontier, developing a romanticized literary vision of Western landscapes and pioneer life. His best-known works include Songs of the Sierras (1871), which brought him international recognition, and Songs of the Sun-Lands (1873). Miller traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Americas before eventually settling in the Oakland hills of California, where his property, known as The Hights, became a gathering place for writers, artists, and visitors.
