Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830–1916) was an Austrian novelist, playwright, and short-story writer, widely regarded as one of the most important German-language literary figures of the late 19th century. Born into an aristocratic family in Moravia, she became celebrated for her psychologically insightful fiction, social criticism, and exploration of moral responsibility and class distinctions. Her best-known works include the novel Das Gemeindekind (The Child of the Parish, 1887) and the novella Krambambuli. Despite the social restrictions placed upon women writers of her era, Ebner-Eschenbach achieved considerable literary recognition and became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1900.
