Details:
Caroline Norton autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated August 15, no year, from Prospect House. Written in the third person and signed four times within the text as "Mrs. Norton," the four-page letter is addressed to the Reverend Mr. Fielder and concerns the conduct and departure of a young servant named E. Farey.
Norton writes, in part: "Mrs. Norton presents her compliments to the Rev'd Mr. Fielder and begs to say she has had no cause whatever of dissatisfaction with E. Farey who seems a well disposed youth, & doing his duty as well as can be expected in a house where he has not the advantage of being under a butler."
She further explains that Farey is free to leave her employment whenever needed, although he has expressed a desire to return home first to collect his belongings and visit friends.
The letter comprises four handwritten pages on two adjoining sheets, measuring approximately 3.75 x 6 inches folded. Very good to fine condition with light age toning, original folds, a strip of tape along the edge of the final page, and a circular rusty paperclip impression.
Caroline Norton (1808–1877) was an English author, poet, and influential social reformer whose campaigns helped advance the legal rights of married women in Victorian Britain. Following a highly publicized separation from her husband, George Chapple Norton, she became an outspoken critic of laws that denied married women independent property rights and custody of their children. Her advocacy contributed to the passage of the Custody of Infants Act of 1839, the Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857, and reforms relating to married women's property. A successful novelist and poet, Norton was among the most prominent early voices for women's legal rights in 19th-century Britain.
