Length:133cm(52.36in) Width:33cm(12.99in)Colour on paper. This is an outstanding lotus painting in Zhang Daqian’s signature splashed-colour style of his later years. Large washes of azurite and malachite green are splashed and blended to create an illusory pond scene, merging ink and heavy mineral pigments with unrestrained vitality. The lotus blossoms are painted with cinnabar and outlined with fine gold lines on veins, presenting magnificent splendour. One fully bloomed flower stands elegantly with two flower buds. Slender and sturdy stalks interweave with water weeds in natural rhythm. Vertical colophon on the left with forceful calligraphy and two seals. Lotus symbolizes purity and noble integrity. The dreamlike splashed background contrasts sharply with the meticulously drawn golden-lined red lotus, embodying his integrated Chinese-Western artistic language. The paper bears natural age toning, in original hanging scroll mounting, good condition.
