Rare 1967 Monterey Pop Festival PosterArtist: Tom WilkesMedium: LithographPrinting Date: 1967Series: The Art of RockSize: 12 ¼" x 21 ¼"
The Monterey Pop Festival, held June 16-18, was one of the high-water marks in the music scene for the year 1967. It is estimated that 55,000 people attended, with perhaps as many as 90,000 present at the event’s peak at midnight on Sunday. The Monterey Pop Festival hosted the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who, and one of the first major public performances by an up-and-coming singer named Janis Joplin. The influence of the Monterey Pop Festival is unquestioned, and it is generally regarded as one of the beginnings of the “Summer of Love” in 1967. Posters for the festival were produced in two sizes. The large-size posters were used for advertising and were posted around the area. The smaller ones were intended to be sold as souvenirs at the festival. Both types were printed on a foil paper and are very scarce today, especially in high grade. Near Mint copies of the smaller-size poster command in the area of $4,500 and are rarely available.
