
Description
(1824-1897) Union brigadier general of Ohio volunteers, cited for gallantry for his actions at Antietam and Fredericksburg. Later in the war, he was responsible for Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan while the latter was imprisoned at Columbus, Ohio, during which seven of his men escaped. A good pair of signed items, includes: War-date A.E.S. on a 3.25 x 2.75 in. slip of paper cut from a larger document, Columbus, OH, Aug. 19, 1863, forwarding the enclosed document. He signs ‘Jno Mason’ in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Vols Comd’g’. Toned, ragged at the right edge, with archival tape mounting remnants on the verso, else very good. WITH: A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Washington, D.C., March 3, 1891, to his daughter, offering his condolences for the recent death of her husband and discussing securing his pension for her and her children. He signs ‘Jno Mason’ in black ink beneath the date on the first page. Faintly toned, with original mailing folds and a 1 in. split between the two leaves, else very good. Two pieces.
