Description
(1816-1890) Union brigadier general who, following military protocol, placed himself under Col. Dixon Miles during the Battle of Harpers Ferry in September of 1862, but found himself left in command to carry out the surrender of Union forces after Miles was shot and killed while raising the white flag. He faced a court of inquiry for his role in the surrender but was exonerated. Rare S.P., 2.25 x 4 in. sepia, a carte de visite featuring a chest-up view of White in civilian clothing. He signs in full across the bottom, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen U. S. V[olunteers]’. The verso of the CDV bears the backstamp of A. Helser of Chicago. Evenly toned throughout, with minor bumps to the corners, otherwise in very good to fine overall condition.
