BERKELEY, Calif. – The Thursday, December 14 auction of Americana-Travel & Exploration-Maps & Views at PBA Galleries includes two original examples of Don Louis Perceval poster art dating to circa 1950. The draft studies for an Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) poster featuring the Bay Bridge in San Francisco are estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

No posters of the precise design of the color tempura painting are known, so it seems it was rejected in favor of another view that has the perspective shifted above the bridge. It is this design, based on a photograph that appears in the second mock-up included in the lot. The cataloger comments: “[Perceval] was already well-respected before he moved from England to Los Angeles, and his art was rarely rejected, making this a rare snub of one of the great illustrators of the American West in the 20th century.”

WILLISTON, Vt. –  An icon of the 1960s and the most successful amphibious vehicle ever sold to consumers, the Amphicar continues to draw smiles on sight – especially when it’s motoring about in the water.

First introduced at the 1961 New York Auto Show, the Amphicar truly created a splash, though not in terms of sales figures; only 3,800 or so were built between 1961 and 1965, after which production ceased (remaining inventory would sell off through 1968). The Amphicar was the brainchild of Hans Trippel (1908-2001), a German industrial designer whose first big hit was a Schwimmwagen (which translates as ‘Floating Car’) used by German forces in World War II. He would go on to design Mercedes-Benz’s famous gullwing doors used on the 300 series, and then returned for another water-borne attempt with the Amphicar.

Interestingly, the Amphicar was built by the Quandt Group, a mega-industrial conglomerate founded by Gunther Quandt and later run by his son Harald, whose mother divorced Gunther in the 1920s and would marry Joseph Goebbels and became known as the “first lady of the Third Reich.” The couple would famously murder their six children prior to taking their own lives, making Harald the family’s sole survivor largely because as a Luftwaffe aviator, he was captured by Allied forces in 1944 and placed in a POW camp.

This Amphicar cannot be dated to a specific year within the production run, but it is in generally complete condition after a 15-year storage rest. Merrill’s Auctioneers states the car will require a complete restoration, but fortunately for the new owner, the International Amphicar Owner’s Club is there to help with resources and advice. Estimated at $30,000-$50,000, the Amphicar is a unique addition to Merrill’s Decorative Arts, Advertising, & Toys event on Wednesday, December 13.

NEW YORK – The Mickey Mouse watch was the brainchild of Herman ‘Kay’ Kamen, the stellar salesman hired by Walt Disney to handle licensing and merchandising. It was under Kamen’s direction that Mickey Mouse became a business. The Ingersoll-Waterbury Clock Company signed on to the idea and sold Disney watches in their thousands from 1933 until the advent of the Second World War.

Few of the many surviving examples of the Mickey Mouse wristwatch are in the condition of this one dating to 1940, which retains its original pictorial box and factory paperwork. Part of SJ Auctioneers’ sale on Sunday, December 17 titled Silverware, Toys, Decor, Glass Art, it is estimated at $750-$2,500.

PHILADELPHIA – Robert L. Pfannebecker is better known as a collector of modern and contemporary craft, so much so that the American Craft Council made him an honorary fellow. An auction set for Monday, December 18 at Material Culture shows a different facet of Pfannebecker’s interests, featuring 339 lots of work by contemporary and cutting-edge artists.

No fewer than 17 pieces are by Tony Fitzpatrick (American, b. 1958-), a self-taught artist whose influences range from tattoos to children’s book illustrations to the designs of the mass cards handed out at the funeral home his father ran to the works gracing the walls of the Art Institute of Chicago. He creates paintings, drawings and layered collages, and he founded Big Cat Press, a printmaking studio, in 1992, but the Fitzpatrick piece that bears the highest estimate belongs to none of those media. Titled White Circus: Dancin’ with the Beast, he rendered it in pigment and ink on a slate chalkboard, crowding its white-painted frame with lines of cursive and placing a muscular black big cat gripping a fish by the tail at the center. The undated work is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

LONDON – The spirit behind the famed Keep Calm and Carry On propaganda poster predates World War II. Self-taught artist Laura Knight (British, 1877-1970) channels that very spirit in My Lady of the Rocks, an oil on canvas she made during the first World War.

Toward the end of 1915, Knight earned a permit from the British government to paint landscapes of the country’s coast (an act that was presumably off-limits for fear that enemies would glean strategic geographic knowledge from contemporary plein air canvases), and she made the most of it. My Lady of the Rocks was part of her output from that time. It pictures a favorite model of hers, Marjorie Taylor, as well as Knight’s dog Tip.

The lot notes ably delineate the Keep Calm and Carry On aura of the painting: “Echoing the conventions of the Old Masters, where the Virgin carrying the infant Jesus is often seated in a landscape, here the viewer is presented with a secular Madonna, the embodiment of virtue, on whom to project emotion. Might she be Britannia, defending the cliffs? Or a sweetheart, awaiting soldiers’ return from France? Either way, the heroine appears as strong and imperturbable as the landscape to which she belongs. Soberly dressed, yet chic in the practical fashions of the day, with her sturdy walking boots she exudes vitality and capability. The overcast weather holds no fears for her: she is prepared. With its subtle, veiled patriotism, it is little wonder that the picture was popular with the viewing public when exhibited, and that Knight’s appeal endures.”

The painting did have a few misadventures between its creation and the present day. At some point in the middle of the previous century, it was tweaked to make it more marketable, swapping out the black hat for a red headscarf and applying eyeshadow to the seated figure. Maybe these alterations led to its failing to sell at auction at Bonhams in 2002, and maybe not, but the story does have a happy ending. A dealer purchased the piece in 2008, had it X-rayed, learned the truth about how it was supposed to look, and had the mid-century embellishments removed.

My Lady of the Rocks appears in Christie’s auction of British and European Art scheduled for Thursday, December 14, with an estimate of £300,000-£500,000 ($379,100-$631,700). It will also appear in a Laura Knight catalog raisonné now being prepared by the artist’s grand-nephew.
