(1889-1951) German divisional commander who against all odds held off over 2,000 Russian attacks at Cholm for 107 days and was awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves. S.P., 3.6 in. x 5.5 in. b/w, a Hoffman real-photo postcard showing Scherer in uniform. Signed in pencil at the lower right corner adding rank of General Leutnant, verso filled out and sent to an address in Freiburg, Feldpost postmarked with date '29. 8. 43' (Aug. 29, 1943). Fine.
