Description
(1826 - 1895) Confederate major general who fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and The Crater; Lee granted him a battlefield promotion at The Crater. A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., ‘Chamberlain’, July 19, 1893, to Ohio Republican senator John Sherman. In full: ‘If not asking too much, I would be glad when Sn. [president pro tempore Charles] Manderson calls up his ‘Joint Resolution’, That you will move to strike out all after the 2nd line and insert the enclosed, and then bring on the issue squarely. I may ask some other senators to do the same thing, but as yet have not done so. Senators [George G.] vest and [George C.] Perkins and [Cushman K.] Davis are friendly and also senator [Richard F.] Pettigrew.’ He boldly signs ‘Mahone’ at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with mounting remnants to the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
