(1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Oct. 2, 1845, the naval appointment of John W. Livingston to serve as 'Commander in the Navy'. Co-signed by Secretary of the Navy JOHN C. DOBBIN (1814-1857). Light folds, Pierce's signature a bit spotty in places, else fine. JOHN W. LIVINGSTON (1804-1885) would rise to the rank of rear admiral. He would serve as Commandant, U.S. Navy Yard, Gosport 1862-63 and senior commander of the African Squadron.
