(1874 - 1964) 31st President of the United States whose attempts to reverse the course of the Great Depression led to his defeat at the polls by Franklin D. Roosevelt. T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Dec. 2, 1938 to William Cavalier, a California investor and philanthropist. In part: '...I have your letter...about the Investment Bankers' Jury of Awards. I have so many small irons in the fire now I think I had better keep out of this until I get some things cleaned up...' Fine. At the time, Hoover was still on the political attack after F.D.R., seeking revenge for his perceived bad treatment and defeat at the polls years earlier.
