Description
(1795 - 1849) Eleventh President of the United States who led the country during the Mexican-American War, and secured the territories of Oregon and Washington. Partly-printed D.S. as president, 1p. 4to., Washington, June 16, 1846, an order to the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to an 'emission granted to George Turner master of the British Ship 'Kestrel' of Liverpool'. Signed in full, in fine condition. Double-matted with an engraving and set into an attractive black and gold wood frame. The vessel referred to was likely the HMS KESTREL, a British brigantine of 202 tons, purportedly lost in 1852. An 'emission' from 1846 likely refers to distributing prize money from captured enemy vessels or naval bounties, as indicated by a 1846 proclamation on prize money distribution made by the Royal Navy.
