War-date, partly-printed D.S. of GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878) Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy who proposed the blockage of Southern ports and the construction of the ironclad fleet, 1p. 4to., ‘Navy Department’, Apr. 4, 1864, an appointment of Joseph Waw as ensign under the command of SILAS H. STRINGHAM (1798-1876) Union admiral who commanded the North Atlantic Blockading Fleet and led the assault on Hatteras Inlet. Beneath Welles’s signature, Stringham signs a manuscript endorsement: ‘Passed, May 20. Report without delay to Rear Admiral Paulding, at New York…’. HIRAM PAULDING (1797-1878) Union rear admiral who directed the salvage of ships at the Gosport Navy Yard after the evacuation of Confederate forces, signs to confirm that Waw reported to him. Finally at top is the forwarding signature of SAMUEL P. LEE (1812 - 1897) Union rear admiral and a relative of Robert E. Lee who commanded various blockading squadrons and was active at Vicksburg. A great assemblage of signatures, in very good condition.
