Length:65cm(25.59in) Width:31cm(12.20in)This is an outstanding ink portrait of Zhong Kui by Xu Cao. At the centre stands Zhong Kui in official robe and headgear, with thick beard and imposing expression, resting one hand on his sword. Two attendant ghosts stand beside him, one holding an offering. The artist employs forceful and fluid orchid-leaf line drawing for robes, with skilful variation in density and rhythm. Fine rendering of facial features and beard relies solely on gradated ink without colour. Xu Cao specialised in figure painting, especially the theme of Zhong Kui. This work inherits classical line drawing traditions, capturing vivid facial expression and dynamic drapery. Original mounting, good condition.
