Length:70cm(27.56in) Width:30cm(11.81in)This is an excellent Zen-themed figure painting by Pu Xinyu depicting Budai Monk. The monk is painted with bald head and high forehead, bare big belly and warm smile, presenting a carefree demeanour. He holds a wooden cane topped with ganoderma, carries a sack on his back and grips a palm-leaf fan in the other hand, walking slowly. Robe folds are outlined with smooth, concise ink lines and tinted with light ink and ochre in subtle hues. A seven-character poem is inscribed in the upper right with elegant calligraphy, stamped with two red seals. Pu’s Buddhist and Taoist figure works inherit the essence of literati painting, focusing on spiritual expression rather than elaborate ornamentation. This painting conveys Budai’s open-minded, joyful and detached Zen state through restrained brushwork. Original old mounting, paper naturally yellowed with age, in good condition.
