Length:96cm(37.80in) Width:49cm(19.29in)This is an exquisite painting of Avalokitesvara copied from Dunhuang murals by Zhang Daqian. The Bodhisattva stands on multi-petalled blue lotus, with elegant and full body, serene and compassionate facial features, slender eyes and red lips. The crown, earrings and bejewelled garlands are elaborately decorated, painted with mineral azurite, malachite and cinnabar, presenting rich and antique hues. Ribbons flutter gracefully. One hand holds a flaming pearl aloft, the other hangs down holding silk streamer. Robe lines are firm and rounded, inheriting the brushwork of Sui and Tang Dunhuang murals. The aged paper shows yellow patina, evoking the vicissitudes of ancient wall paintings. Inscription on the right reads: *Piously painted by Zhang Daqian in the fourth month of Yiyou year*, with two artist seals below and an additional seal at lower right. Painted when Zhang Daqian studied and copied Dunhuang art on site, the work fully captures the spirit of Dunhuang Buddhist painting, solemn and profound, with both artistic and religious significance. Original silk mounting.
