Ma Jin, a master of horse painting in modern China, specialised in meticulous paintings of steeds, inheriting the artistic legacy of Giuseppe Castiglione. His horses feature precise anatomy and delicate rendering. Qi Gong excelled in landscape painting and calligraphy with elegant brushwork. This is a collaborative masterpiece. Ma Jin depicts a chestnut steed with white mane and hooves, standing calmly on rocks beside a stream. The horse is well-proportioned, with lifelike fur texture, blending Western realism and traditional Chinese painting. Qi Gong supplemented the autumn landscape: textured cliffs, red leaves on branches and faint distant peaks, conveying the mood of autumn. The poem *Horse Poem* by Li He is inscribed on the upper left. Inscription: Painted by Qi Gong (Yuanbai) in the sixth month of Renwu year, with two seals. Ma Jin’s inscription: “Painted by Ma Jin (Zhanru)”, accompanied by his seals. A fine joint work of painting and calligraphy, in its original old mounting and good condition.
