Description
second half 19th century, 230 x 184 cm, South West Caucasus
TSCHEBULL, RAOUL, Kazak. Carpets of the Caucasus. New York 1971, pl. 27 *** BAUSBACK, PETER, Antike Orientteppiche. Brunswick 1978, pl. p. 187
A large green shield medallion, its wide white outline studded with stars, fills the whole of the red field. A red cartouche lies at its centre, and each of its tips contains a geometrically abstracted giant palmette. The medallion is flanked by eight lateral trees with hook-shaped leaves. The polychrome palmettes in the white main border look like water beetles. This monumental Kazak is probably an Armenian weaving. Tschebull and Bausback have published almost identical examples.
