Description

(1825 - 1896) Union brigadier general, colonel of the 10th Maine who was severely wounded at Antietam, later colonel of the 29th Maine Infantry in the XIX Corps, and took part in the Red River Campaign in Louisiana, and later Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Norway, ME, Sep. 21, 1870, to an unnamed fellow general, asking for a copy of an inspection roll, likely of members of the Grand Army of the Republic, and inquiring if there will be another inspection upcoming. He signs ‘Geo L Beal’ in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, with some brushing to the ink in places, otherwise in very good condition overall.
