
Description
(1828-1905) Union brigadier general, operated in Kentucky against Edmund Kirby Smith and John Hunt Morgan. At the Battle of Franklin, his troops captured 1,000 Confederate soldiers and 22 battle flags. War-date A.N.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Wellsvile, OH, April 17, 1865, to a colonel W. W. H. Davis, informing his correspondent that his letter did not reach him until recently, hence the delay. He signs ‘J. W. Reilly’ at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen U. S. Vols’. Mounted to a large album page, with an albumen photograph, likely taken from a CDV, pasted above, otherwise in very good condition. Reilly would resign his commission two days after this note was written.
